3-hour walk with our dog Hana. Mujahed smuggling anti-tank mines at night across the border mountains from Pakistan to Afghanistan's Paktia Province, August 1984. Two volunteer mercenaries I took with me to Afghanistan on my last trip with mujahideen in October 1987: Eugenio from Italy, left, with eyepatch (lost one eye to a stray bullet), and Jacques, a former French Legionnaire in Chad and other places. I ran into them in Peshawar as they were becoming desperate to find a group that would take them -- so I went with them to my contact 'Engineer' Es Haq and lied to him that they were journalists like me (just to help them out).
